The Future Lives in Your Mouth

Rabbinical teaching from the Torah and Kabbalist tradition reminds us that we can conjure worlds through words. It suggests that our words, both spoken and written, have the power to shape our own reality, influence our thoughts, and even impact the world around us. What we say to someone can cause them to stay or go away and how we talk to ourselves can be healing or harmful.

At times we may lack the language to imagine a different future for ourselves. We can be so insnared with the story of our lives we cannot fathom a way out of the entanglements, and the future appears bleak, at best, just more of the same. This is when we may need to borrow words from others. Our friends and family, our favourite books, poems and movies might inspire us to give language to a new future for ourselves. Talking about our stuck-ness can be extremely beneficial because we give language to your feelings and our thoughts become externalised. We might not realise there are kernels of possibility embedded in the stories we share.

A good narrative coach or counsellor can help us sieve through the rubble of our stories to find the gold. This is where the future might be glimmering. We can practice talking about how those glimmers could shine brighter and guide us towards that new future providing a different life story, a new chapter. Consider reaching out to Made Better Human for a free consultation and to explore how working with your narratives could create a different way forward for you, your team or your organisation.

If you are feeling stuck, entrapped in a story you might have outgrown or don’t know how to leave, why not reach out to Made Better Human or consider attending our Made Better Stories program.
